Q) What is HypnoBirthing?

Many of us are pre-conditioned to fear childbirth. Majority of women will have witnessed far more distressing scenes of childbirth and heard plenty of horror stories about childbirth than they will have seen gentle serene births or heard positive birth stories. One of the reasons for this is the media. After all, there’s not much entertainment in a calm, relaxed and enjoyable birth experience when up against a dramatic race against time birth as seen on the television! It would be fair to say that a lot of mums and dads who arrive at a Blossom and Bloom class bring with them anxiety about the birth process and fear that something will go wrong.

HypnoBirthing aims to empower parents to be, by giving them a sound knowledge of the birthing process and birth physiology so that they really gain an understanding of what takes place during the birth of their baby. With knowledge comes power. Once mum and dad are fully versed in the mechanisms of birth, we then learn how to let go of our pre-conditioned fears and re-condition one another to embrace birth and all that it brings. We learn ways to relax, to switch off our neo cortex (thinking part of the brain) and trust that our bodies & baby knows what they are doing. Visualisation techniques when practiced are extremely effective throughout each stage of your labour, alongside breathing techniques. A combination of theory and practice, practice, practice is what makes HypnoBirthing ideal in supporting you through your baby’s birth.

Q) Will I feel out of control under Hypnosis?

No! Quite the opposite. Hypnosis in childbirth, and indeed HypnoTherapy are very different to the kind of stage Hypnosis you may have seen on television or at a show. Nobody can make you do anything you don’t want to do. There are no clucking like a chicken exercises or anything designed to humiliate you. The aim of learning self-hypnosis for childbirth is that you can tap in and out of your ‘inner self’ at any given moment. You are in complete control at all times. Self-hypnosis techniques are a wonderful tool during childbirth that will support you in keeping calm and relaxed during your baby’s birth.

Q) When should I start the classes?

You can attend classes at any point in your pregnancy. HypnoBirthing will work for whoever puts the practice in – and practice is essential. The majority of women tend to come to HypnoBirthing classes between week 25 and week 30. The earlier the better in my opinion, however women have completed ‘crash’ courses and given birth the following day with huge success! Where the mind leads the body will follow!

Q) Can I bring my partner?

Birth partners – dads and birth companions – are positively encouraged to attend. Not only will they be a huge support to you in your pregnancy and labour, but they will have jobs to do during the labour whilst you concentrate on your breathing and visualisation exercises. Dads & birth partners will also feel empowered and confident both before and during the birth of your baby.

Q) Do I have to have my baby at home?

It is true that mammals birth fantastically well when in the right environment. Being in a small, safe place such as your home will help you produce the hormones necessary to facilitate an efficient comfortable labour – but you can by all means enjoy a HypnoBirth whilst in hospital. Katharine Graves of the HypnoBirthing association trains midwives in HypnoBirthing in some of the major London teaching hospitals, so more and more midwives are becoming familiar with HypnoBirthing. Ultimately, you must birth where you feel safe, wherever that may be.

Q) I need a C –section (or other intervention) can I still benefit from HypnoBirthing?

Absolutely! There is a trend now towards having a ‘natural’ c-section which can be planned in advance with your caregivers. As much as we try to plan the birth of our baby there really is only so much we can do. Unexpected problems can crop up and changes of plan can be made but that doesn’t mean to say you cannot enjoy a HypnoBirth. Many women have inductions, instrumental interventions and c-sections using their techniques learnt in class and practiced at home. Research shows that it is how mum perceives her birth experience that makes all the difference.

Q) Who is HypnoBirthing for?

HypnoBirthing is for any mum to be, whether she is on her first, second or more baby. HypnoBirthing classes are beneficial to all mums & dads to be.

Q) I heard HypnoBirthing will give me a pain free birth, is this true?

HypnoBirthing works on the premise that, using your knowledge & practical techniques, you will be producing two hormones. Oxytocin opens up the uterus to allow for an efficient birth and endorphins (strongest painkiller known to mankind) to allow the birth to be comfortable. It is very true that many women experience no pain and simple pressure, whilst others report feeling pain but being able to handle it without the use of drugs.
